Time – how long does family mediation take?

People often ask “how long will it take to complete the family mediation process”?  Often, they want some idea of how much time they will be spending with their children and how much money they will be left with after the financial division has been dealt with.  Understandably, they will want the answers as soon as possible.

Mediation tends to be the quickest way of resolving any issues that arise from the breakdown of a family relationship.  On average, it takes 2 mediation sessions to resolve children issues.  This can usually be completed in 3 weeks.  That said, we have recently helped a separating couple to reach an arrangement regarding their children in 10 days.

Financial mediation tends to take longer.  Normally, 3-5 sessions are required.  The financial mediation can usually be concluded in 3 months.

By contrast, it is taking on average one year to reach a final hearing in children court proceedings, one year in financial proceedings regarding former partners/cohabitees and 2 years in divorce financial proceedings.  During this period, there can be lots of anxiety, stress and uncertainty for the adults and the children involved.
